Robert Deveau asked:
I, too, am a headache sufferer. I have suffered from both migraines and headaches for twenty years. I specify migraines as different from headaches because I recognize that they are entirely different experiences. Most people use the word migraine to indicate a very bad headache.
One can have a light or less severe migraine, but it is still a migraine. Migraines are characterized by a throbbing pain on one side of the head usually around the eye. This will usually be accompanied by a sensitivity to light and sometimes noises. In addition, they can last from a few hours to a few days and can cause nausea and vomiting.
There are other variations of headaches: Cluster, tension and hangover, for example. Each has their own symptoms and it seems, their own set of triggers. Some of the common headache triggers are nuts, seeds, old cheese, red wine and beer. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it gives a good idea of some of the foods to stay away from.
I noticed some years ago, that the single most important step that I took to reduce my headaches was that I stopped taking pain killers. Specifically, pain relievers that contained codeine such as Tylenol 1. This was extremely difficult and painful at first. I have never been addicted to any drug, except painkillers and caffeine but I cannot imagine withdrawal pains from harder drugs to be any more painful than the withdrawal that I went through.
The other things was to consume lots of water. Some headaches are caused by muscle spasms in the neck and properly hydrated muscles are less likely to spasm and cause pain.
